Dallas Cowboys being 'conservative' with QB Dak Prescott, who could resume throwing next week

OXNARD, Calif. -- Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott could resume throwing during training camp practices next week as he continues to work through a latissimus strain in his right shoulder that knocked him out of practice on July 28.

The day after the injury, Mike McCarthy said Prescott would throw in a "few days," but after a planned meeting with the team's medical staff on Monday, the determination was made to keep the quarterback from throwing a little bit longer.

"After research and looking at it we just don't want this to turn into something big," McCarthy said. "So he's doing everything that he possibly can but we're just being a little bit more conservative with rehab."

McCarthy said Prescott has not suffered any kind of setback with the injury. He was not scheduled to play in Thursday's Hall of Fame Game against the Pittsburgh Steelers before getting hurt, and McCarthy did not say whether Prescott would travel to Canton, Ohio, or remain in Oxnard, California, for rehab.

"If this was in-season, I think it would be a different outlook, focus," McCarthy said. "But because of where we are, having the extra week, we just want to make sure this doesn't turn into something bigger."

After Tuesday, the Cowboys do not practice again until Saturday, when they have a joint workout with the Los Angeles Rams. Whenever Prescott returns, McCarthy said the quarterback would likely be held to a pitch count.

"I think that's normal when you don't throw [that] you're always working up to a certain number," McCarthy said. "But he's still doing all of the running, doing all of the walkthrough reps. So he's still getting the work that he needs, particularly the footwork and the time clocks and things like that. We're just cutting out the throwing right now."

Garrett Gilbert, Ben DiNucci and Cooper Rush will play Thursday against the Steelers.

McCarthy said the plan remains for Prescott to play some in the preseason, despite the recent layoff.
