Chicago Bears RB David Montgomery leaves game with knee, ankle injuries but prognosis 'good'

NFL, Chicago Bears

CHICAGO -- The prognosis for Bears running back David Montgomery, who exited Chicago's 23-20 win over the Houston Texans midway through the first quarter with injuries to his right knee and ankle, is "good" according to coach Matt Eberflus.

"He's going to be day-to-day, so that's a positive," Eberflus said. "We'll see where he is tomorrow and re-evaluate it from there. It's a positive, for sure."

Montgomery was in pass protection when his right leg got rolled up underneath him with 8:44 to play in the first quarter and the Bears driving from the Houston 35-yard line. The fourth-year back was examined on the field by trainers before he walked off gingerly under his own power. Montgomery was further examined in the medical tent on the sideline before heading to the locker room.

The Bears announced Montgomery was doubtful to return but never ruled him out. The team made the designation that he sustained two separate injuries, but Eberflus declined to address specifics.

"It's lower leg right now, so we'll just look at it," he said. "There's a couple things going on there, but we'll look at it."

Montgomery was replaced by Khalil Herbert, who finished with 20 carries for 157 yards and two touchdowns. Herbert said Montgomery was in "good spirits" when he texted with him after the game and let him know that he dedicated the win in his honor.

"Told him that was for him," Herbert said. "Got to hold it down and help the team win and find a way to win."

As a team, the Bears finished with 281 rushing yards, their most in a game since 1984 when the eclipsed 283 yards against the Dallas Cowboys. Through three games this season, Chicago is averaging 187 yards rushing per game.

Wide receiver Byron Pringle also left the game in the first quarter with a calf injury. He was seen walking back to the locker room and also didn't return.
