Rams backup QB John Wolford out at least 10 days after undergoing appendectomy

IRVINE, Calif. -- Los Angeles Rams backup quarterback John Wolford was absent from Friday's training camp practice after he underwent an unexpected appendectomy after waking up with pain in his side, according to a team spokesperson.

Wolford's recovery is expected to take 10 to 14 days.

"John obviously caught us a little bit off guard with that news but obviously we want to get him all fixed up and ready to roll as soon as possible," offensive coordinator Kevin O'Connell said after practice.

Quarterbacks Devlin "Duck" Hodges and Bryce Perkins will compete for repetitions behind Matthew Stafford as training camp continues.

On Saturday, the Rams will practice against the Dallas Cowboys in Oxnard, California, and they will open the preseason schedule on August 14 against the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium.

Rams coach Sean McVay has said Stafford and starters will not play in preseason games.

Hodges started six games for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2019. He completed 62.5 percent of his passes for 1,063 yards and five touchdowns with eight interceptions. He spent the 2020 season on the Steelers' practice squad.

Perkins spent his rookie season on the Rams' practice squad.

Last season, Wolford started the regular-season finale in place of an injured Jared Goff against the Arizona Cardinals and completed 57.9 percent of his passes for 231 yards, with an interception, in a 18-7 victory. He also started the following week in a wild-card playoff victory over the Seattle Seahawks and completed 6 of 8 passes for 29 yards before he exited the game with a neck injury.
