Cristiano Ronaldo's penalty was the 19th spot kick of the 2018 World Cup, a new record for most penalties awarded at a single World Cup. This World Cup has now gone past the record for 18 penalties awarded, shared by 1990, 1998 and 2002, and there are still 28 matches to be played after Monday. The penalty awarded to Iran later in the game was the 20th of this World Cup, converted by Karim Ansarifard.

Iranian goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand's save to deny Ronaldo was the fifth instance of a player failing to convert a penalty in Russia, already the joint second highest in World Cup history. Only the 2010 edition, with six penalties saved or missed, has had a higher tally than 2018.

Of the 98 goals scored at this World Cup, 24 of them have come after the 75th minute. The theme continued in Group B's matches, with Iago Aspas and Karim Ansarifard both scoring the equalisers for Spain and Iran, respectively, after 90 minutes.

At 34 years and 272 days, Ricardo Quaresma became Portugal's oldest World Cup goal scorer following his stunner against Iran. The previous holder of the record for Portugal was Cristiano Ronaldo (33 years, 135 days), when he scored the winner against Morocco. In all, Quaresma came the 16th player to have scored his first World Cup goal at the age of 34 years or older, though he remains the second oldest scorer in the 2018 World Cup, after Felipe Baloy of Panama.

Isco became Spain's 47th different goal scorer at World Cups, when the Real Madrid player equalised against Morocco. This meant all of Spain's first five goals at the 2018 World Cup have been scored by Madrid-based players - Diego Costa of Atletico Madrid (three) and Nacho and Isco of Real Madrid (one apiece).

Sergio Ramos has drawn level with former goalkeeper Andoni Zubizarreta as the second most capped Spanish player in World Cups, with 16 appearances. The record still lies with Ramos' former team-mate Iker Casillas, who has played 17 World Cup matches for Spain.

Edinson Cavani joined his team-mate Luis Suarez as the only Uruguayans to have scored in three World Cups. Cavani, who also had scored in 2010 and 2014, netted the third goal in Uruguay's 3-0 win against Russia. Suarez also joined a select list of six players to have scored multiple goals in three World Cups -- Germany's Miroslav Klose (who did it in four), Uwe Seeler, Jurgen Klinsmann, Rudi Voller, Ronaldo of Brazil, and Italy's Roberto Baggio.

Saudi Arabia, by beating Egypt in Group A, snapped a 12-match winless streak of World Cup matches, winning for the first time in 24 years, since beating Belgium at the 1994 World Cup. Egypt had their entry into the record books too, as goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary became the oldest World Cup player ever, at 45 years and 161 days. He marked the occasion with a saved penalty too.
