Nebraska losing quarterback Patrick O'Brien

Quarterback Patrick O'Brien plans to transfer from Nebraska, leaving a pair of freshmen as the top contenders to start for coach Scott Frost in his first season at the school.

O'Brien did not attend practice on Thursday, quarterbacks coach Mario Verduzco told reporters after the Cornhuskers' ninth workout of the spring. A spokesperson confirmed that O'Brien is leaving the program.

The sophomore from San Juan Capistrano, California, completed 18 of 30 passes in 2017 as Nebraska's top backup to Tanner Lee. Lee left one year early to enter the NFL draft after Frost arrived from Central Florida, bringing his up-tempo, spread offense with roots under former boss Chip Kelly at Oregon.

Nebraska will finish the spring without a QB who has played in a collegiate game other than sophomore Noah Vedral, who is ineligible in 2018 after following Frost and his entire staff from UCF.

Frost signed Adrian Martinez, the No. 8-rated pocket passer nationally out of Fresno, California, in December. Martinez enrolled early and was competing this spring with O'Brien and redshirt freshman Tristan Gebbia. Gebbia, out of Calabasas, California, was an ESPN 300 prospect in the Class of 2017. He enrolled early last year and redshirted as the Huskers struggled to a 4-8 finish under coach Mike Riley.

Sophomore walk-on Andrew Bunch is also working at the position.

Nebraska's spring game is set for April 21. The school sold out Memorial Stadium, which seats 85,458, in 26 hours two months ago amid the excitement around the Frost hiring.
