Suns release new alternate uniform

The Phoenix Suns have a new alternate uniform, and it's a mix of old and new.

The design, released today and dubbed "Phoenix Rising," contains two elements that will be familiar to longtime Suns fans. The chest lettering is rendered in a more subdued version of the western font that appeared on the team's uniforms from 1973 through 1992.

Those uniforms also had a sunburst motif at the base of the shorts, a modified version of which has been incorporated into the new design.

In most other respects, however, the new uniform has a modern look. Like many current NBA alternate designs, it features a sleeved jersey, and the base color is gray -- a popular tone for alternate uniforms throughout the uniform world at the moment.

This marks the second time the Suns have made the unusual color pairing of orange and gray. The first was with their "PHX" alternate uniform, which they wore from 2003 through 2013.

Most NBA teams have not put patches or other graphics on their sleeves, but the Suns appear to like the patch look. The new design features the team's "S" logo on the left sleeve, similar to the "PHX" patch that appears on the sleeve of the team's orange alternate uniform.

The new uniforms will make their on-court debut Thursday night, as the Suns host the Oklahoma City Thunder.
