BU men's lacrosse to go Division I

NCAA Men Lacrosse, NCAA

The Boston University men's lacrosse team, currently a club sport, will become a Division I program beginning in the 2013-14 season.

The school announced the news Tuesday in a statement, which also described plans for a new, on-campus facility for its field hockey team, and the addition of women's lightweight rowing for 2012-13.

Boston University is one of three schools to recently announce the addition of Division I lacrosse teams. Furman University will add men's and women's varsity squads in spring 2015, and Colorado will add a women's program in spring 2014.

The Terriers will play in the America East Conference with Albany, Binghamton, Hartford, UMBC, Stony Brook and Vermont.

"Boston University's addition of men's lacrosse strengthens America East's status as one of the top men's lacrosse leagues in the country," America East commissioner Amy Huchthausen said.

BU athletic director Mike Lynch told InsideLacrosse.com that he would like to hire a coach by this summer in order to give the person time to hire staff, develop the program and recruit.
