O'Brien, Brady happy for Ochocinco

In different interviews today, Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien and quarterback Tom Brady answered questions on veteran receiver Chad Ochocinco, whose 33-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter contributed to the team's victory.

It was Ochocinco's lone catch of the day in 54 offensive snaps as he moved into the No. 2 receiver role with Deion Branch inactive because of a groin injury. Ochocinco also showed up as a downfield blocker at times, the game marking some of his biggest contributions in what has been a quiet season production-wise (14 receptions on 29 targets).

"I thought he played a decent game. I thought he played hard," O'Brien said. "He made a good play for us on the touchdown catch and did some other things. There were some routes where he was coming open, where Tom was pressured, or the ball went somewhere else. ... When he caught that touchdown pass, we were happy for him."

O'Brien stressed that the overall passing game is more than just about one person.

"That whole position, I really think Tiquan [Underwood] had a big catch for us on a drive. Obviously 'Welk' had another solid game, as he's had all year. Then Aaron [Hernandez] and Rob [Gronkowski] played a good game, along with the backs, so we had a bunch of guys contribute. It's never really about one guy."

Brady, during his weekly appearance on sports radio WEEI, touched on Ochocinco's performance and presence on the team.

"Without Deion playing, other guys have to step in and fill that role that Deion's had for us. Chad was in there; he really got us started. That was a huge touchdown catch," he said.

"Every week he gets more and more comfortable. I wish I found ways to get him the ball more. He's really embraced his role. He's a great teammate. He's fun to be around and every week he gains more confidence. Hopefully we continue to build on it. This week is better than it was last week."

Ochocinco declined comment from reporters after the game.
