Italy, Serbia in water polo final

SHANGHAI -- Stefan Mitrovic's second goal of the game with 44 seconds left gave Serbia a 15-14 win over Hungary and a place in the gold-medal final of the water polo world championships.

Serbia, the defending champion, will play Italy, which led Croatia 8-4 Thursday going into the final period before holding on for a 9-8 win. The gold-medal final and the bronze match between Hungary and Croatia will be played Saturday.

In other matches Thursday, the United States beat Germany 9-8 and Spain edged Montenegro 10-9, with the winners advancing to the fifth-place game, also to be played Saturday.

Australia beat Canada 8-6 for ninth place and Japan defeated Romania 18-15 for 11th.

China and Greece will play in the women's gold-medal final Friday.
