BOSTON -- Shortstop Jed Lowrie is being held out of the Red Sox starting lineup Monday night against the White Sox because of a sore and stiff left shoulder.

Lowrie suffered a bruised shoulder when he collided with left fielder Carl Crawford during the first game of Sunday’s day-night doubleheader in Detroit. Neither manager Terry Francona nor Lowrie seemed to think the injury was serious.

Lowrie was going to test his shoulder by taking a few swings, and could possibly be available as a pinch hitter.

“This is nothing. He’ll play [Tuesday night],” said Francona in his pregame meeting with the media.

“I imagine I should be able to go [Tuesday night],” said Lowrie.

It could have been worse, said Lowrie.

“He [Crawford] is strong and he runs fast.”

A year ago, an early season collision between left fielder Jacoby Ellsbury and third baseman Adrian Beltre basically finished Ellsbury’s season.

Drew Sutton was called upon to play shortstop in Lowrie’s place against the White Sox.

Reliever Bobby Jenks, who made a pair of one-inning rehab outings for the Pawtucket Red Sox over the weekend, will be activated from the disabled list Tuesday, Francona said.

Jenks was placed on the DL on May 5 because of a right biceps strain. The right-hander gave up a run on one hit, and he also fanned one Sunday in Pawtucket.

“He feels fine,” said Francona.

Right-hander John Lackey, on the DL since May 16 because of a right elbow strain, will make a rehab start for Pawtucket Tuesday night.
