David Buehler welcomes competition

IRVING, Texas -- David Buehler is welcoming the competition at the kicker position now that the Cowboys have signed veteran Kris Brown.

“It’ll be good,” Buehler said. “It’ll make me better, the competition. I was a little surprised, but, hey, I don’t make those decisions. I can only deal with them and control what I can control, which is putting the ball through the uprights. He’s a good guy. He’s been around for awhile, so I can learn a lot about him.”

Brown practiced Friday but interim coach Jason Garrett said Buehler will be the kicker Sunday at Philadelphia.

Buehler has made 24 of 31 field goal attempts on the season but missed a crucial extra point last week at Arizona that allowed the Cardinals to win the game with a field goal. Buehler said he thought Brown’s signing was a result of the season but acknowledged the most extra point did not help his cause.

“I’m obviously curious about my future but I haven’t asked [about it], no,” Buehler said. “I hope they give me a chance. I’ve proven I can get the job done. I’ve been through some ups and down and learned from it. This season has definitely been a building year and I feel like I’ve been through pretty much every scenario a kicker can go through in one year. I’ve learned how to overcome them, how to take the positive out of negative situations.”
