IRVING, Texas -- Growing up in Southlake, Texas, Kris Brown knows all about the Cowboys’ tradition. He’s now excited to be a part of it.

Brown signed a two-year deal Friday to provide kicking competition for David Buehler in 2011, although there is an outside chance he will be active Sunday at Philadelphia.

“It was important for me to sit down and figure out what opportunities I wanted to explore and when this situation become an option, with me being from here … it was pretty much a no-brainer,” Brown said.

Brown made four of five attempts with San Diego this year after spending the first 11 years of his career with Pittsburgh and Houston (2002-09). He lost the job with the Texans after a subpar 2009 season where he made just 21 of 32 tries.

He kept himself in shape in part by kicking at Rice and working out on his own. The Cowboys kept two kickers on the 53-man roster in 2009, and it is something that could be revisited next year.

“I’m going to worry about things I have the ability to control and that’s my performance on the field, that’s my behavior on and off the field, and I’m not going to worry about things I have no control over,” Brown said. “I don’t know what they’re doing to do and what decisions they’ll make … All I can do is focus on my job and what I can do.”
