Favre still upset by Childress criticism

MINNEAPOLIS -- It's been a few days since we've discussed the relationship between Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress and his players, so here is another shot across the coach's bow. As he prepared for today's game against the Green Bay Packers, quarterback Brett Favre remained upset with Childress' postgame criticism of his performance in the teams' first meeting this season.

Favre told ESPN's Ed Werder that what he remembers most about that game is neither the hostility from the fans at Lambeau Field nor the two fractures he suffered in his left foot. Instead, it was Childress' angry postgame tirade in which he, among other things, admitted that he considered benching Favre and pointed out that he threw to the wrong receiver on one of his three interceptions.

"It's a damn shame," Favre told ESPN's Ed Werder. "What I think about is going to my press conference knowing he had taken some shots at me.''

Favre appeared exasperated in that news conference, but his comments to Werder represent the first time he admitted to taking offense at Childress' statement. I think we all assumed he felt that way, but we hadn't heard it yet from Favre himself.

Regardless, Favre told Werder he took every practice repetition last week in an effort to create enthusiasm among his teammates. Favre reported right shoulder pain last week, possibility related to a partially torn rotator cuff, but he said: "If the arm comes off, it comes off. If I can't throw anymore, I can't throw any more. I've got nothing to save myself for now.''

More in a bit.
