A Look Back At Jim Valvano's
Legendary ESPYS Speech

With the ESPYS on tonight (ESPN 9P ET), it made us think about the top moments from show through the years. It was back on March 4, 1993 -- the very first ESPYS -- when Jim Valvano was awarded the inaugural Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award. Valvano had been diagnosed with bone cancer in June 1992. During the speech, Valvano announced the creation of the "Jimmy V Foundation", an organization dedicated to finding a cure for cancer. He said that the foundation's motto would be "Don't give up. Don't ever give up."

Jimmy V made us laugh and cry when the teleprompter told him that he had 30 seconds left, to which he said, "They got that screen up there flashing 30 seconds, like I care about that screen. I got tumors all over my body and I'm worried about some guy in the back going 30 seconds."

Jimmy V died on April 28, 1993. Here is a look back at the legendary speech.
