Juco S David Guthrie flips to New Mexico

After committing to Illinois on Tuesday, David Guthrie knew he still had a visit with New Mexico defensive coordinator Jeff Mills scheduled for the next day.

The 5-foot-11, 200-pound safety decided not to tell Mills about his commitment. He wanted to hear what the coach had to say. Guthrie showed Mills around the College of the Siskiyous campus.

By the end of the tour, Guthrie decided he had changed his mind. He flipped his commitment from Illinois to New Mexico.

“When I talk to New Mexico, I feel like they love me,” he said. “It’s a place I am going to be happy to be at for the next few years of my life. I’m not saying I’m not going to be happy if I go to Illinois, but I feel like I’m going to get that father-son thing at New Mexico.”

In the end, Guthrie said he felt a connection with Mills he didn’t get from the Illini coaching staff.

“He was just talking to me as a person,” Guthrie said. “I talked to him a lot about everything. I feel that connection with him, and it’s a stronger connection and New Mexico with him.

“New Mexico is a better place for me.”

After thinking about his decision, Guthrie said he plans to stick with his commitment to the Lobos.

“This is the final decision,” he said. “Done deal. I’m not going to talk to Illinois anymore. I’m not going to talk to Wake Forest anymore. I’m in. I’m in the boat.”
