ESPN 60 SF Oubre holding out for UNC

It seems like everywhere he goes, 6-foot-7 wing Kelly Oubre (Fort Bend, Texas/Bush) leaves his mark on the court. That was the case at Houston’s Under Armour Grind Session last month when he was selected as one of the top five players at the event. It also held true at the prestigious adidas Invitational in Indianapolis over the summer. Oubre has made great strides since I first evaluated him, and he could soon be in line to ascend in the ESPN 60.

"My goals for this season are to win a state championship, play hard and help my senior teammates get exposure,” said Oubre. “Working to move up in the rankings too, although that is not my top priority."

Oubre has a big-time offer list but is still waiting to see where he stands with one school in particular, North Carolina. Right now, he holds offers from UCLA, Kansas, Georgetown, Arizona, Connecticut, Ohio State, Baylor, Missouri, Alabama, LSU, Texas, Texas A&M, Memphis, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Kansas State, West Virginia and Houston.

"I have letters from North Carolina but have not talked to them,” Oubre said. “I would like to know where things stand because I would be interested [in them]."

Oubre is a long and lean lefty with smooth stroke and quick trigger. His length allows him to shoot over smaller defenders with ease and canning shots from deep. He is especially deadly spotting-up in the corners on the break or when he receives a kick-out pass off of dribble penetration. Oubre also is an excellent straight-line driver, especially when going to his left where he is an excellent finisher with touch and body control. Oubre makes his presence felt on the glass as well by being quick to the ball in and out of his area. He can also ignite the break with a bust-out dribble after clearing the defensive glass.

Oubre is capable of getting hot and breaking the game open with his prolific shooting touch. He must to continue to add strength to his 195-pound frame and continue to develop his right hand dribble, but his upside is tremendous and continued hard work should yield an even higher level of production.

"I have been working on becoming a leader for my team and improving my shot, which is my strength, my defense and really my all-around game," said Oubre, the No. 35 player in the ESPN 60.

Oubre also has put some thoughts into what he is looking for in a college coach as well as the academics his prospective school will offer.

"I want a coach in a stable situation who will challenge me and help me reach my goals," he said. "School is my main priority. I don't have a favorite subject because all my classes are important.”

Oubre has been one of the hottest recruits in the Class of 2014 and if he continues to improve at this pace, expect him to have a great junior season and be in position to reach his goals. Based on what I have seen and heard, I like his chances.
