X Games brings culture to Aspen

A Green Day documentary, an inspiring HBO film on snowboarder Kevin Pearce and musical acts Calvin Harris and Major Lazer highlight a weekend of films, music and fashion at X Games Aspen later this month.

The documentary "¡Cuatro!" chronicles an extraordinary year in the life of Green Day. Fresh off a world tour and their trilogy of albums released last year, Green Day has morphed from a garage punk band in the '90s to Tony Award winners for their musical "American Idiot." In "¡Cuatro!", audiences will see the creative process behind their 2011 album trilogy, "iUno!", "iDos!", "iTre!" and follow the band on their promotional tour playing small clubs to test out their new material. "iCuatro!" screens on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 9:15 p.m. at the Wheeler Opera House.

In "The Crash Reel," snowboarder Kevin Pearce experienced a life-threatening accident in 2009 when he was training to go head to head with pipe expert Shaun White at the 2010 Winter Olympics. Pearce suffered a traumatic brain injury and many doubted whether he'd be able to walk again, let alone snowboard. HBO's "The Crash Reel" chronicles Pearce's remarkable recovery and how his family supported him throughout the ordeal. "The Crash Reel" screens on Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 8:15 p.m. at the Wheeler Opera House just a few days after its debut at the Sundance Film Festival.

Two runway shows are scheduled, promising to demonstrate the connection between the action-sports lifestyle and fashion with familiar brands and some new twists. Both shows will commence just prior to each of the film screenings at the Wheeler Opera House on Wednesday and Saturday.

On the music side during X Games Aspen, Calvin Harris and Major Lazer headline several shows throughout the weekend with help from Bloc Party and Tyler the Creator. Major Lazer -- a project by DJs/producers Diplo and Jillionaire as well as Walshy Fire -- and Harris both draw huge crowds at music festivals across the planet and collaborate with the likes of Beyonce, No Doubt, Snoop Lion, Rihanna, Dizzee Rascal and Ke$ha.

Bloc Party kicks things off at the Belly Up in Aspen on Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 8 p.m. and Harris and Tyler the Creator take the stage at Belly Up the following Friday. Harris plays again on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 4:30 p.m. at the X Fest stage as the X Games Aspen competition ends for the day, and Major Lazer closes the weekend with a show on the X Fest stage on Sunday at 4:15 p.m.

With a healthy mix of new films, emerging artists and fashion, X Games fans will be treated with plenty to do outside of watching the competition.
