Saints restructure Hawthorne's deal

The New Orleans Saints are continuing to work toward getting under the salary cap. In addition to the contract restructure for guard Ben Grubbs that we already told you about, they made another move.

The Saints have cleared an additional $2.05 million in cap space by restructuring the contract of linebacker David Hawthorne, according to a league source.

Hawthorne had been scheduled to receive a $3 million roster bonus on the third day of the league year. But the Saints erased that by giving Hawthorne a $3 million signing bonus on Tuesday. Instead of having the scheduled roster bonus all count toward this year’s cap figure, the signing bonus allows the $3 million to be spread out over the life of Hawthorne’s contract.

Hawthorne’s cap figure has dropped from $4.76 million to $2.51 million.
