ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- The mystery of resting James Ihedigbo is now over. The safety has not one, but two injuries he is apparently dealing with.

The Detroit Lions listed their top defensive free-agent signing with both knee and neck injuries on Thursday, keeping him out of practice. Ihedigbo did not play in the final two preseason games and has not practiced all week as Detroit prepares for its season opener against the New York Giants on Monday night.

Ihedigbo said Monday he is planning on playing against the Giants, but he also indicated he was not injured and merely resting, too.

If Ihedigbo's injuries keep him out, there's a possibility undrafted rookie Jerome Couplin ends up starting in his place.

Safety Don Carey also did not practice Thursday due to a hamstring injury that has apparently lingered for a while.

The only other player on the Lions' injury report is rookie defensive tackle Caraun Reid, who was limited with a shoulder injury. Reid typically plays special teams and is the fourth defensive tackle in a rotation.

Detroit does not have to give injury designations until Saturday due to the Monday night game.
