SF Justise Winslow to trim list this month

ESPN 60 small forward Justise Winslow (Houston, Texas/Saint John's) is a terrific young prospect with the bloodlines to be a special player in college and beyond. The 6-foot-5 emerging talent is the son of former University of Houston Phi Slama Jama member and pro basketball player Ricky Winslow.

While Winslow is three inches shorter than his father, he is quick to note there are several similarities in their games.

"We both are very athletic, have the ability to rebound, finish and run the floor,” says Winslow, the No. 9 player in the Class of 2014. “But I am a better ball handler than he was."

Winslow is a power wing player who is tough, physical and competitive. He is a left-handed slasher who can get to the rim in the open court and from the wing position in the half court. Winslow can also create matchup problems with his ability to score in the post. He has a good first step, which allows him to gain an immediate advantage off the dribble. Winslow has a good basketball IQ and feel for the game. His handle is strong and he is an excellent passer with matching court vision, which allows him to make teammates better.

"I am best at getting to the rim and finishing through contact, but I will need to continue on improving my ball handling, shooting and defending of smaller players on the perimeter,” Winslow said.

Winslow’s game has really taken off due to his workouts with former Maryland great and NBA star John Lucas.

"Justise is one of the more athletic players that has been in our gym,” Lucas said. “He is a work in progress. He needs to continue to work on his shot. But he is very unselfish and has serious, I mean serious, post-up game. He has a chance to be special.”

Recruiting-wise, Winslow has taken a number of unofficial visits and has trips to Florida and UCLA coming up in the next few weeks. He has more than 25 offers from the likes of UNC, Duke, Florida, Ohio State and Baylor.

“I am in contact with Kentucky, but they have not offered yet,” Winslow said. “I am planning on cutting down my list after these last two unofficial visits. Probably by the end of November.”

Although he has yet to come to a decision, Winslow has a good idea of what he demands out of his prospective school and has received valuable recruiting advice from his mother.

"I want a team that will contend for a championship, a staff that can prepare me for the next level and a campus that feels like home,” he said.

It is safe to say that Winslow is a player in high demand who has a plan for success that he is executing flawlessly.
