It’s an unlikely place to have spawned an NFL player, but Sapelo Island, Ga. – population 47 – was where Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Allen Bailey called home. Bailey’s aunt, an author well-versed in the island’s history and its people, can trace the family’s roots back to a slave brought to the island in the early 1800s. Still reachable only by ferry, the island maintains many of its African traditions, even as it faces an uncertain future amidst a dwindling population and encroachment of the modern world. In recognition of Black History Month, Jeremy Schaap travels home with Bailey to learn about the island’s distinct history and threats to its future. Schaap also discusses this story in this podcast

Known for marching to the beat of his own drum, José Luis Sánchez Solá, famously known as “Chelís”, has left Mexican soccer to coach in the United States. Although never having played professional soccer, “Chelís” was given the opportunity to coach a first division team in Mexico’s Liga MX. Fame followed as the team’s success and his own controversial and colorful personality attracted national attention. ESPN Deportes spent a day in Los Angeles with ”Chelis” and his new team: Chivas USA. He provided insight into the color and pop he’ll bring to Major League Soccer.
