If given the chance, Braylon says he's ready

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Braylon Edwards may be familiar with his old teammates, but in the time he’s been gone, a new offensive coordinator has rearranged the furniture in the playbook.

The wide receiver has three days to heal a hamstring and get on the field for the Jets when they head to the Titans. The Jets must win out in order to keep playoff hopes alive, and Edwards thinks he will be ready if practice is any indication.

“I’ve been able to go out there and do some things and show some things,” Edwards said, “that there’s a high probability chance I’ll be able play.”

Jets offensive coordinator Tony Sparano was cautious about whether or not Edwards would be part of the wide receiver set.

“It depends on a lot of things,” Sparano said. “Right now he’s coming in, one he’s coming in at this point and time and he has to learn a new offense. ...He handles it very well, the guy’s really a smart guy, if we can get him enough reps from a mental standpoint that way, we also have to see where he is from a physical standpoint.”

Edwards said he spent the two practices shadowing wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal. He said most of the terminology is unfamiliar, but the offensive philosophy is the same.

“Eight years in and four teams — I’ve done a lot,” Edwards said. “The only thing is some of the routes are different because they like you to run them differently. I’m open to anything and at the end of the day it’s all about getting open.”

Edwards said his hamstring feels better. When asked why Seattle thought he would miss the season with the injury but the Jets might put him in uniform on Monday, Edwards thought it might be a simple difference in direction.

“The other team, maybe they’re moving in a different direction,” Edwards said. “If you look at the age and youthfulness of the Seattle Seahawks — (coach) Pete Carroll is a guy about youth, every one on that team is year 2, years 3, year 1.”

Ryan said that he hoped Edwards would be able to go even though he was “really limited” in practice on Thursday. Either way, Edwards is practicing like he’ll be out there.

“When and if I can go in there on Monday, I’m not going to go have excuses, ‘Oh I’m new to the team,’” Edwards said. “I’m not a guy of excuses I plan on being out there and executing with the team.”
