The Mag Teams Up with Marvel Comics to Create First Collaborative Comic: “LeBron: King of the Rings”

A full 82-game season. A confident Kobe. A new LeBron. We are reminded why we love this game. Everyone loves an opening tip off. There are no debacles on O-and-O teams. There are only new palm trees. New smiles. New teammates. A new city. A new 2,500 miles between you and the messy past. Of course , you don’t have to be “Superman” to appreciate the power of flight. You could be Jeremy Lin, who hitched his shooting star to the Rockets. Or JaVale McGee, who soared from D.C. as fast as his wingspan could carry him. Or Carmelo Anthony, who flew Denver’s coop only to ruffle every feather he could find in New York. Or you could be James Harden, who will be tracked like a falcon until he lands, then we move right on to the next. Like CP3. Or Andrew Bynum. Or, oh yeah, Dwight Howard.

ESPN The Magazine’s NBA Preview on newsstands Friday, October 19, will cover all of this and more including of course, team-by-team projections.

In addition, the NBA Preview features a special insert with some help from Marvel: Two years ago, LeBron James predicted he would win not one, not two, not three … but seven NBA titles. What if he was right? In their second collaboration, The Mag and Marvel Comics have united once again to create LeBron: King of the Rings , an epic tale of zombies, clones, holograms, bionics and a star who will stop at nothing to fulfill his promise. For more on the backstory of how this comic came to life ESPN The Magazine Editor in Chief Chad Millman talks to Editor in Chief of Marvel Comics, Axel Alonso, and others featured in the NBA Preview including NBA analytics guru Kirk Goldsberry about shooting metrics, in his weekly podcast.

Go to outtakes from Carmelo Anthony’s cover shoot and behind-the-scenes video where he talks about what has changed about him since coming into the NBA as a rookie.  Why at times last season with the Knicks it wasn’t about basketball.   Why there isn’t anything anyone can say to change what it is he wants to do on the basketball court.  Why he could not care less about what people have to say this season, and much more.
