MINNEAPOLIS -- This is why managers make lineup cards out hours before a game, so mistakes like this can be caught in time and laughed about.

The original lineup card posted by Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine had Darnell McDonald in the outfield and Kelly Shoppach catching, something the Sox would typically do against a left-hander. Outfielder Ryan Sweeney and catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia were not in the lineup.

That was later changed, however -- hours before the game -- when Valentine made the belated discovery that the Twins were starting a right-hander, Liam Hendriks, a 23-year-old Australian called up late last season by the Twins.

"I looked on this thing," Valentine said, gesturing to his cellphone, "and there was no history on him. It had his name, and 'against left-handed hitting.' My fault. That's why you make these lineups out early enough."

Valentine said Saltalamacchia was the one who discovered the error.

"It was kind of funny," the manager said. "I talked to him yesterday about him not playing, and I thought I alluded to the fact that he could get two days in a row with a left-hander (Wednesday). So I kind of locked into right, right, left."
