ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- The Detroit Lions have released tight end Tony Scheffler, who last played Oct. 6 against Green Bay, when he suffered a concussion.
The Detroit Free Press reported the move earlier.
Scheffler's concussion was his third in four years. Prior to his release, he had seven catches for 82 yards this season.
Scheffler, a Chelsea, Mich. native, is an eight-year NFL veteran who played four seasons with Denver before heading to the Lions before the 2010 season. He spent the past four seasons with Detroit. He has appeared in 107 career games, catching 258 passes for 3,207 yards and 22 touchdowns.
His release leaves Detroit with two healthy tight ends: Brandon Pettigrew and rookie Joseph Fauria.
In his place, the Lions signed offensive tackle Barry Richardson, who started every game for St. Louis last season. He went to Tennessee before this season but was released in August.
