Shawne Merriman will be likely be subject to NFL waivers at some point during the 2010 season.
Even though he has done very little in the past three seasons, I expect there to be interest in Merriman. He is only 26 and he had 43.5 career sacks. If he ever gets fully healthy, he can be an asset.
I think teams like New Orleans, New England, Washington and perhaps Green Bay and Dallas could all take a look at Merriman. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if Merriman stayed in the AFC West. Let’s look where he may fit in the division.
Denver: If Merriman was free today, I’d think Denver would be a favorite to land Merriman. The Broncos’ best pass rusher Robert Ayers is out for 2-3 months with a broken foot and pass-rushing star Elvis Dumervil is out for the season. When Merriman is available, I expect Denver to investigate because of a need at the position.
Kansas City: He could help some. But this doesn’t seem like a Chiefs-like move at this point. Even though he could help, I’d be surprised if the Chiefs went this way.
Oakland: I wouldn’t be surprised to wake up one day and see Merriman donning the Silver and Black. It’s seems like an Al Davis move. The Raiders’ run a 4-3 defense and Merriman has played in a 3-4 system. But the Raiders have plenty of 3-4-type players. I could see it. I really could.
