Ambitious, Dual-language Editorial Initiative Explores the Question: ‘What does it mean to be Latino in Major League Baseball?’

Béisbol Experience to have Significant Presence across ESPN Platforms This Summer, Leading into MLB All-Star in Miami

ESPNs Béisbol Experience is a comprehensive, dual-language editorial initiative, which is exploring an important and complex question – ‘what does it mean to be a Latino player today in Major League Baseball?’ During the 2017 MLB season, ESPN’s domestic and international platforms are providing compelling content related to that significant question through deep reporting, immersive storytelling and hundreds of interviews and profiles, in both English and Spanish.

Béisbol Experience will have an increased presence, featuring many of the project’s signature pieces, across ESPN platforms starting in June as it approaches MLB All-Star, which will emanate from Miami, Fla. Content from this project made its debut during the World Baseball Classic.

Alison Overholt, Vice President & Editor-in-Chief, ESPN The Magazine & espnW:

Béisbol Experience is about telling the many unique and specific stories of the triumphs and challenges, the joys and journeys of the Latino baseball player experience. Anchored by an unprecedented 50-player interview project, this is an important, immersive season-long storytelling experience across all of our platforms, done as only ESPN can do. It’s about connection, community, and conversation — Béisbol Experience paints a portrait of that place where baseball and culture intersect, for both Latino ballplayers and fans.”

Upcoming content highlights:

  • A look at what is next for Cuban players who don’t make an MLB team and are unable to return to their country;
  • Dedicated ESPN The Magazine Béisbol Experience issue
  • A televised panel discussion on subjects related to the project;
  • com/ESPN The Magazine piece which quantifies David Ortiz’s fame and explores which young Hispanic players may reach Ortiz’s popularity level.

Freddy Rolon, Vice President & General Manager, ESPN Deportes:

“The title Béisbol Experience represents how language is a connector to culture. We’ve intentionally used bilingual reporters who can go back and forth between Spanish and English so that the players can communicate in the language they feel most comfortable with, and at the same time, we are providing the content in both Spanish and English to be as inclusive and broad with our outreach to Béisbol fans.”

Contributing ESPN platforms:

  • ESPN The Magazine – including a dedicated Béisbol Experience issue on the project, players and stories;
  • Dedicated com section – Béisbol Experience
  • Regular topics, features and discussions on ESPN and ESPN Deportes’ game telecasts and editions of SportsCenter and Baseball Tonight;
  • Content across Outside the Lines and E:60;
  • Regular ESPN Deportes and ESPN Deportes.com content;
