Although catcher Matt Wieters did not receive a qualifying offer from the Baltimore Orioles following the 2016 season, the free agent is not ruling out a return to the only MLB team he has known.

Rumor Central

Agent Scott Boras, who represents Wieters, told reporters, including Steve Melewski of MASNsports.com, on Wednesday that there is still a chance that the 30-year-old backstop re-signs with Baltimore.

Wieters, a switch-hitter, slashed .243/.302/.409 with 17 home runs, 17 doubles and 66 RBIs last season. Defensively, he threw out 35 percent of runners attempting to steal.

"Matt’s always enjoyed playing in Baltimore, so it’s always a possibility," Boras said, per Eduardo A. Encina of the Baltimore Sun.

"All the teams kind of check in on catching and we’ve been meeting with clubs about him. We’re kind of going through the process of scheduling things with him, meetings with such, so it’s going fine."

PressBoxonline.com's Rich Dubroff heard from Boras that Wieters might not sign any deal until January. That potential contract, according to ESPN's Jim Bowden, is projected to be in the three-year, $40 million range.

The Orioles drafted Wieters with the fifth overall pick in the 2007 draft. He has spent the past eight seasons with Baltimore, earning four All-Star selections and two Gold Gloves.

He suffered a cut on his left forearm during a household accident this offseason and isn't expected to resume baseball activities for at least another month, per Dan Connolly of BaltimoreBaseball.com.

Boras also relayed to reporters at the winter meetings that there have been no extension talks with Orioles closer Zach Britton, per Melewski. The left-hander, who won't become a free agent until the 2018 offseason, converted all 47 of his save opportunities in 2016 and finished fourth in AL Cy Young voting.
