Everybody starts the season undefeated. But the cruel reality of college football is that only a handful of those teams have a legitimate chance of winning the 2017 College Football Playoff. The defending national champion Clemson Tigers have made it to the CFP for two straight years and are tied for eighth nationally in ESPN 300 recruits signed over the past five years (52). Both elements would seem to point in the direction of this team being a shoo-in for a 2017 CFP playoff berth, yet a closer look indicates that Clemson is much more likely to miss the CFP this season.
