Ravens advocate getting a point for putting kickoff through uprights

BALTIMORE -- These days, everything is going through the uprights for Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker.

Long field goals. Extra points. Even his kickoffs.

If it was up to coach John Harbaugh, getting a kickoff over the crossbar would result in more than a touchback.

"I'm on record as advocating that that should [count as] a point," Harbaugh said after Sunday's 19-14 win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

Some reporters began to laugh at Harbaugh's suggestion.

"I'm serious now," Harbaugh said. "But really, how exciting would that make it? If we're going to make these touchbacks so valuable, let's do it, let's go for it."

Tucker has recorded 35 touchbacks this season, which ranks 12th in the NFL. It's unknown how many of those have split the uprights.

After hearing Harbaugh's proposal, Tucker put his full support behind it.

"I think eventually we are going to keep making the game harder for kickers, then you have to reward us in some way," Tucker said. "The ownership and the competition committee and the NFL are great at this give/take thing when [collective bargaining agreement] time comes around. Maybe we can throw that one out there. Maybe you can get a point for getting the ball through the uprights on a kickoff. I would certainly really appreciate that. Especially on a day like [Sunday], when you're playing a close game and a division rival, you want any points you can get. They are hard to come by, and if you can get them like that, then I'm all for it."
