Hue Jackson: Browns, Cowboys have the rookie QBs they should have

BEREA, Ohio -- For the second time this season, Hue Jackson had to answer questions about the rookie quarterback the Cleveland Browns could have taken.

In the opener it was Carson Wentz. The Browns traded the second overall pick to the Eagles, who took Wentz.

This Sunday it's Dak Prescott, taken 135th by Dallas, 42 spots after the Browns had taken Cody Kessler.

Kessler is with a winless Browns team. Prescott is 6-1 with the Cowboys.

"He's a young ascending player," coach Hue Jackson said of Prescott. "Plays with a lot of poise. Runs their offense extremely well. He's done a great job."

Prescott would not be playing were it not for the back injury that sidelined Tony Romo, but Prescott has played so well he may keep the job when Romo is healthy.

"They found the right guy for their offense," Jackson said.

Jackson said the Browns liked Prescott and that he was under consideration at draft time. They simply liked Kessler better.

"Obviously we have the guy that we took and they have the guy that they took," Jackson said. "i think that everybody has the right guy for them, and he fits for them."

In five starts, Kessler has completed 67 percent of his throws for 947 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. His rating: 94.4.

In seven starts, Prescott has completed 65.2 percent for 1,773 yards, nine touchdowns and two interceptions. His rating: 99.6.

The Cowboys' media release is filled with glittering stats on Prescott -- his 75 attempts in his first two starts without an interception is a rookie NFL record -- but it also adds that he has Ezekiel Elliott, who leads the NFL with 799 rushing yards, and an offensive line built to protect.

Kessler does not have the same group around him.

The two quarterbacks shrug off any and all comparisons and what ifs. They are actually close.

"That's my boy," Prescott said of Kessler.

"One of my really good friends," Kessler said of Prescott.

The two met at the Manning Passing Camp.

"We have just been good friends and always been fans of each other and helping each other out,” Kessler said.

"He's probably one of the better friends that I have at the quarterback position throughout the league," Prescott said.

It's tough to be critical of Kessler. He gives all he has. The question is whether what he has is enough. The Browns have to see more of him before deciding if he should get the starting job next season. At this point, it's important he play so the Browns can see what they have.

The Cowboys, though, appear to have found their quarterback, for this year and several following.
