Signs pointing to an improved Josh McCown returning for Browns at quarterback

Takeaways from Browns practice and interview sessions …

1. Crossing their fingers: Hue Jackson wouldn’t come out and say it because things can still change, but it appears Josh McCown will be back at quarterback Sunday against the Jets. McCown was listed as “full” on the club’s official participation report for the first time since he rejoined practice two weeks ago after suffering a broken left collarbone in Game 2 on Sept. 18. “He’s definitely been medically cleared to play, [but] things change, as you guys know, during the week,” Jackson said. The last time McCown played, the Browns hit the Baltimore Ravens with three touchdowns in the first quarter, before losing, 25-20. Jackson wouldn’t even characterize the boost McCown would bring to the field. “What he did way back then was a long time ago. We’ve got to work him at practice and see where we are. Hopefully he’s out there and is the best guy standing. Would it be a boost? It’s a boost to have any of quarterbacks playing right now. We’ll know more towards the end of the week.” Meanwhile, Cody Kessler, who has made the past five starts in place of McCown, remains in concussion protocol and did not practice. Jackson would not rule him out, either. “I think it’s hard to speculate on any of that.”

2. Others getting close: Receiver Corey Coleman (broken hand) was active, but limited, for the first time since suffering his injury at practice on Sept. 21. He doesn’t appear ready, however, to see playing time … Receiver Terrelle Pryor (hamstring) was limited, as the Browns try hard to keep him from having an extended layoff. “I think he’ll be fine by the end of the week,” Jackson said … Also returning to full participation in Wednesday’s practice were center Cam Erving (illness) and defensive end Carl Nassib (hand). Nassib has played the past three games with his broken left hand heavily padded.

3. Say it ain’t so, Joe: Joe Thomas wants to believe Jackson’s emphatic statement on Monday that he won’t be traded, but he also wouldn’t be shocked if something changes by Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline. “There’s no surprises in the NFL,” said the veteran left tackle. “You always have to be ready and able to roll with any punches you’re given, but I wouldn’t expect to be traded. But it wouldn’t be the most shocking thing in the world because that’s the way the NFL goes. We’re commodities in this business and we get traded just like stocks and bonds. It’s just part of what you have to expect when you become an NFL player.” Thomas said he hasn’t been assured by anybody in the Browns’ front office that he wouldn’t be traded, but he doesn’t consider that to be a tip-off to anything. “When you’re a good older player on a team that’s not winning a lot, your name’s naturally going to be tied to trade talks,” he said. “It happens across the league. Whether people are calling and asking, or the Browns are calling [around], I have no idea. But all it takes is a fan or someone in the media to connect the dots and it’s an easy story. That’s the NFL.”

4. Meet Joe Callahan: A year ago at this time, Joe Callahan of Wesley College in Dover, DE, was preparing for a road game at Montclair (NJ) State, against which Callahan would throw for 447 yards and six touchdowns in a 56-35 win – the Division III school’s eighth straight victory. “And now I’m in an NFL locker room. It’s definitely been an exciting experience to go from that to preparing for the Jets. It’s been pretty crazy,” Callahan said in front of his new Browns locker. Callahan’s crazy year has included stops in Green Bay and New Orleans, where he played alongside Aaron Rodgers for the summer exhibition season and had a cup of coffee with Drew Brees in a seven-day stint this month. “The stuff I learned from them is priceless, and I got to see what two of the top quarterbacks in the NFL are like, as well,” Callahan said. Now he is cramming the Browns’ playbook after being claimed off waivers on Monday. Multiple reports said the Packers, particularly coach Mike McCarthy, wanted the Packers to re-claim Callahan, but the Browns beat them in the waiver pecking order. “I definitely enjoyed my time in Green Bay, but they let me go and I want to be somewhere where I’m wanted, so I’m glad that Cleveland picked me up,” Callahan said. Callahan probably won’t be on Sunday’s active list, but chances are we will see the spunky, 6-1, 215-pound passer on the field at some point. After all, there are nine games left and we’ve already seen six players at quarterback this year.

5. Touche: Jackson began his daily press briefing by shouting out the Indians and congratulating them on their 6-0 victory in Game 1 of the World Series on Tuesday. “I’m not going to pronounce coach’s name, since I butchered it last time,” Jackson added. Sound clips of Jackson referring to Manager Terry Francona as “Coach Francola” have been aired frequently on Cleveland radio.
