Setting up the final weekend of the season

Here’s where we stand in the “Hunt for October” heading into the final series of the regular season.

By the numbers:

6: Teams have clinched a playoff spot (all division winners).

7: Teams are still alive for the four wild-card spots (four in the American League and three in the National League).

17: Teams have been eliminated from playoff contention.

10: Games on Friday involving a team still trying to get in the playoffs or playing for seeding.

Teams already in the playoff field

Texas Rangers (host Tampa Bay Rays, 8:05 p.m. ET): The Rangers have clinched the AL West. Their magic number is one to clinch home-field advantage throughout the postseason (with a win or a Red Sox loss).

Boston Red Sox (host Toronto Blue Jays, 7 p.m. ET on ESPN2/WatchESPN): The Red Sox have clinched the AL East. They are tied in the loss column with the Indians for home-field advantage in the AL Division Series (the Red Sox hold the tiebreaker, so they would have home-field advantage if the teams finish tied). The Red Sox are two games back of the Rangers for the best record in the AL and home-field advantage throughout the postseason (the Rangers would get the top seed if the teams tie because even though they split the season series, Texas has a better intradivision record).

Cleveland Indians (visit Kansas City Royals, 8:15 p.m. ET): The Indians have clinched the AL Central. They are tied in the loss column with the Red Sox for home-field advantage in the AL Division Series (Boston holds the tiebreaker, so it would have home-field advantage if the teams finish tied).

Chicago Cubs (visit Cincinnati Reds, 7:10 p.m. ET): The Cubs have clinched the NL Central and home-field advantage throughout the NL Championship Series.

Washington Nationals (host Miami Marlins, 7:05 p.m. ET): The Nationals have clinched the NL East. Their magic number is two to clinch home-field advantage against the Dodgers in the NL Division Series.

Los Angeles Dodgers (visit San Francisco Giants, 10:15 p.m. ET): The Dodgers have clinched the NL West. They trail the Nationals by two games for home-field advantage in the NL Division Series.

Teams still striving for a playoff spot

AL wild-card race

Baltimore Orioles (visit New York Yankees, 7:05 p.m. ET): The Orioles are tied with the Blue Jays for the top two wild-card spots (the Jays hold the tiebreaker, so they would host the AL wild-card game if the teams finish tied). The Orioles lead the third-place Tigers by 1½ games in the wild-card race.

Toronto Blue Jays (visit Red Sox, 7 p.m. ET on ESPN2/WatchESPN): The Blue Jays are tied with the Orioles for the top two AL wild-card spots (the Jays hold the tiebreaker, so they would host the AL wild-card game if the teams finish tied). The Jays lead the third-place Tigers by 1½ games in the wild-card race.

Detroit Tigers (visit Atlanta Braves, 7:35 p.m. ET): The Tigers’ game Thursday against the Indians was postponed on account of rain. The game will be made up Monday if it carries postseason implications (either for the Tigers in the wild-card race or the Indians for playoff seeding). The Tigers trail the Blue Jays and Orioles by 1½ games in the wild-card race (both teams hold the tiebreaker over the Tigers).

Seattle Mariners (host Oakland Athletics, 10:10 p.m. ET): The Mariners trail the Blue Jays and Orioles by two games in the wild-card race (the Mariners hold the tiebreaker over the Orioles but split the season series with the Blue Jays; the tiebreaker would come down to better intradivision record, which is still undetermined).

NL wild-card race

New York Mets (visit Philadelphia Phillies, 7:05 p.m. ET): The Mets lead the Giants by one game for the top NL wild-card spot (the Mets hold the tiebreaker, so they would host the NL wild-card game if the teams finish tied for top wild-card spot). The Mets’ magic number is two to clinch a playoff spot (can clinch Friday with a win and a Cardinals loss).

San Francisco Giants (host Dodgers, 10:15 p.m. ET): The Giants lead the Cardinals by one game for the second NL wild-card spot (the Cardinals hold the tiebreaker, so they would host a tiebreaker game Monday if the teams finish tied for the second wild-card spot). The Giants trail the Mets by one game for the top NL wild-card spot (the Mets hold the tiebreaker, so they would host the wild-card game if the teams finish tied for the top wild-card spot).

St. Louis Cardinals (host Pittsburgh Pirates, 8:15 p.m. ET): The Cardinals trail the Giants by one game for the second NL wild-card spot (the Cardinals hold the tiebreaker, so they would host a tiebreaker game Monday if the teams finish tied for the second wild-card spot).
