Dolphins' third-string TE MarQueis Gray prepared for increased role

It has been an interesting couple months for Miami Dolphins backup tight end MarQueis Gray.

Gray was on the roster bubble this summer, unsure if he would make the team. Entering Week 7, Gray is in line to become Miami’s starting tight end when the team takes the field Sunday against the Buffalo Bills.

Starting tight end Jordan Cameron and backup Dion Sims have concussions, putting both players’ status in question. Cameron has missed the past three games, and Sims suffered his head injury in Sunday's win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Gray said he’s prepared to be the first-string tight end.

“No doubt, every week I plan as if I’m going to play a lot and going to be the starter,” Gray said. “Unfortunately, Dion went down. I have to continue to go with the plan of starting again.”

Gray has some momentum. He set a career-high with 81 receiving yards on three receptions against Pittsburgh.

Gray’s biggest play Sunday was a career-long 53-yard reception from Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill that was improvised. Gray was covered on his initial route, but Tannehill broke free of a defender and scrambled to his left and Gray ran to an open spot downfield. Tannehill, who makes some of his best throws on the run, heaved the ball to an open Gray, a play that set up a second-quarter field goal.

“He broke the pocket and I happened to turn up the field,” Gray said of the play. “He had the arm strength and he launched it.”

Sims, a 26-year-old undrafted free agent with 15 career receptions, bounced around the league and played for four teams in four seasons -- the Browns, Bills, Vikings and Dolphins. Gray has a chance to prove that he’s more than a career backup. He has played in 35 career games with nine starts.
