BEREA, Ohio -- Quarterback Robert Griffin III took the first five snaps and the bulk of the first-team snaps on the first day of Cleveland Browns training camp on Friday.

Griffin was energetic, worked quickly and was enthusiastic. But he played like he did in the offseason. His mechanics and throws were mixed, with some good throws and some not-so-good throws.

In team drills, Griffin had a good early throw to Terrelle Pryor, then a throw behind Darius Jennings. He threw a ball away flat-footed down the middle of the field (an odd place to put a ball thrown away), then followed with a low throw to Isaiah Crowell.

Griffin had his moments, but he was not consistent.

If there were a side-by-side comparison of Griffin and Josh McCown, the edge would go to McCown -- even with fewer throws. McCown threw the ball down the field and looked more comfortable in the pocket. A couple of his better throws went to Rashard Higgins on a deep cross and to tight end Connor Hamlett down the seam.

Coach Hue Jackson said Griffin got the bulk of the snaps because McCown's experience means he doesn't need as many.

"I think we all recognize and understand that Josh is an older quarterback," Jackson said. "He's done it for a while so I think the younger guys need to get the lion's share [of reps].

"I don't think Josh needs to take a ton of reps. I think he knows how to do it, what to do. That's one of the luxuries we have, the veteran presence that he has. We'll just keep building the other guys and giving them the opportunities."

Jackson said his plan with reps might change on a day-to-day basis.

"Today worked out that way," he said. "Tomorrow might work out a little bit different. It's just how it goes sometimes."
