Free agent to be: Josh Thomas

Position: Cornerback

Age: 25

Years in the league: 4

What he made last season: With the Lions, Thomas made $75,882 in both cash and a cap charge after being claimed on waivers in December, according to ESPN Stats & Information. He played for three teams last year: Detroit, Seattle and the New York Jets.

What he did last season: He had two tackles for the Jets in one game and played in four games overall between three teams. He only played in one game for the Lions and did not record a statistic. In a very limited sample size – he only had balls thrown at him in two games – he had opponents complete 2 of 6 passes against him for 24 yards and also had two passes defended, according to Pro Football Focus.

His potential market value: Low. He bounced between three teams last season and didn’t really establish an identity with any of them. He played a decent amount for Carolina in 2012 and 2013, but he is probably a player who ends up being invited to a camp, if anything.

Will he fit the Lions: Tough to say. He had a very, very limited sample size with the Lions and was unlikely to be thrown into a defensive unit that had become one of the best in the NFL after joining the club so late in the season. If Detroit liked what it saw in practice, though, he could come back on a minimum deal.

What happens: If he ends up anywhere next season, it would be on the aforementioned minimum deal. Whether that is in Detroit might depend on what happens with some other free agents, but every team needs veteran minimum guys to fill out a roster. At age 25, it might be worth bringing him in to see what he could do during offseason workouts.
