Martin Mayhew trying to change future Pro Bowls

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- In the midst of talking about his team and the direction he wants the Detroit Lions to go, general manager Martin Mayhew also explained one of the things he's going to suggest to the General Manager Advisory Committee this offseason.

He wants to change the structure of rosters for the Pro Bowl.

"I'm going to make a recommendation that we elect a Pro Bowl team with a 3-4 defense and a Pro Bowl team with a 4-3 defense," Mayhew said. "You see guys like DeAndre (Levy) and Lavonte David that don't really get the credit they deserve and get an opportunity to be Pro Bowlers because in the 3-4 these guys have so many sacks.

"A lot of fans are voting for guys with sacks but there's some 4-3 outside linebackers who are outstanding players and I think they should be recognized as such."

Levy has been left off the Pro Bowl roster the past two seasons despite leading the NFL in solo tackles in 2014 (117) and being tied for second in the NFL in interceptions in 2013 (six) along with 85 solo tackles.

Mayhew isn't the first member in the Detroit organization to suggest a change in Pro Bowl balloting. Safety Glover Quin, who led the NFL in interceptions and ended up making his first Pro Bowl, campaigned this season for a complete revamp in how Pro Bowl voting is done.

Mayhew said he hasn't thought much about changing the voting process, but appeared intrigued by the idea.

"I haven't given it that much thought but that's a good thought," Mayhew said. "I should get to vote. I don't get to vote, you know that's not fair. That's a good thought, though."
