On the morning of August 29, 2014, 17-year-old high school football player Lennon Lacy was found dead, hanging by his neck from a swing set in Bladenboro, N.C. News reports focused on the way he died, calling it a “lynching.” Within a week, local and state police had completed their investigation: they called it suicide. Shaun Assael examines Lacy’s death, talks with his family and friends, and learns there is much more to this story than had been previously reported.
