The Film Don't Lie: Lions

A weekly look at what the Detroit Lions must fix:

Sure, there's no actual film this week for the Lions because they were off Sunday, but heading into their game against Miami this weekend, there is a lot that must be remedied. Most important will be to get a struggling offense back on track against the Dolphins, a team with the No. 1 defensive QBR (31.4) in the NFL.

This Miami defense is also first in the league in yards allowed per play (4.68) and per passing attempt (5.61), and in first downs allowed (17.9). Considering the Lions are no better than 14th in the NFL in any of those offensive categories (including 27th in yards per play at 5.1), moving the ball could be a problem.

The easy fix for Detroit is merely getting healthy. When Calvin Johnson and Reggie Bush are both able to play, it forces opposing defenses to plan differently than they would when those guys are hobbled or out. And the Lions haven't had both completely healthy in a game since the third week of the season. It'll be interesting to see how Dolphins defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle handles this as he's never faced Johnson before as a coordinator.

The one time Coyle did face Johnson was in 2009 as the defensive backs coach in Cincinnati; Johnson had six catches for 123 yards in that game.

The other way to fix Detroit's issues is something we touched on in the past few weeks: revitalizing the offense in the first half and finding a way to have a stable running game with Joique Bell, Theo Riddick and Bush. Neither has happened much this season. But Johnson's health might be the remedy to all that ails the Lions' offense.
