QB snapshot: Matthew Stafford

A quick observation of Matthew Stafford and how he played in the Detroit Lions' 34-17 win over the Chicago Bears in Week 13:

After a week in which he had one of the worst games of his career, Stafford had one of his best Thursday against the Bears, and already Lions coach Jim Caldwell has cautioned against reading too much into it.

Stafford’s 75.6 completion percentage was the fourth-best of his career and best since 2012, and his 390 passing yards were the best since Week 8 of last season.

“That level is a bit uncommon,” Caldwell said. “That’s the thing that I think the realistic side of it is that there are very few people that put them back-to-back-to-back at that level. Now, to [be] good enough to win, that’s the most important thing.

“I think he’ll certainly continue to do that.”

The statistics do, however, bode well for Stafford against the visiting Tampa Bay Buccaneers this Sunday.

While duplicating their Thanksgiving performance might seem unrealistic, the Lions face a Buccaneers defense ranked No. 21 in passing yards allowed per game (245.2), 17th in yards allowed per attempt (7.5) and that allows 26.2 points per game. This is also a defense that allowed since-benched Robert Griffin III to complete 71.9 percent of his passes against it in Week 11 and Andy Dalton to complete 70.4 percent of his passes in Week 13.

Tampa Bay has had only one game this season in which its opponent completed less than 60 percent of its passes. So that bodes well for Stafford this week against the Buccaneers.
