Redskins' Jordan Reed optimistic about playing Sunday

ASHBURN, Va. -- Redskins tight end Jordan Reed was still limited in practice, but he was able to do extra work after practice for the first time since being hurt. And he viewed that as a positive sign for his return.

Reed, who has missed the past four games because of his left hamstring, said there’s a good chance he’ll return for Sunday’s game against Arizona.

“Definitely shooting for Sunday,” Reed said. “I feel like if I get everything done this week and everything goes smoothly, I’ll be out there Sunday.”

Reed said he did some extra running after practice. He said his hamstring is tight and “kind of weak” but that it’s getting stronger.

If he returns, he gives the Redskins more versatility on offense. His ability to win one-on-one matchups makes him a valuable target for the quarterbacks and he’s a rare downfield threat for a tight end. The Redskins occasionally use two tight ends in the passing game, often in a stacked formation on either side.

They could increase that once Reed comes back.

If a defense stays in their base front, then it would leave one of them against a safety and the other against a linebacker.

“Two good matchups,” Redskins coach Jay Gruden said. “Then you throw DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon out there, it is a dream scenario.”

Reed also provides more size than tight end Niles Paul as a blocker along the line.

“Jordan is a major part of our offense and what we wanted to do from training camp on,” Gruden said. “When we lost him in the first quarter of the [opener], it put a little hurting on us. To get him back it is a great option for us.”
