Auburn helmet sells for $47K

College Football, Auburn Tigers

The helmet used by Auburn kick returner Chris Davis in last year's Iron Bowl sold for $47,190 early Sunday morning.

The helmet, which is also signed by Davis, was part of an auction conducted by New Jersey-based Goldin Auctions.

"We knew when we received this item on consignment it was something special and would be treasured by Auburn fans, alumni and college football collectors," said Goldin Auctions founder Ken Goldin, who confirmed that an Auburn alum was the winner. "This helmet from one of the most historic and notable plays in college football goes down as one of the highest priced pieces of collegiate sports memorabilia ever sold, and certainly the most valuable that has been auctioned from a player or event that occurred within the past 20 years."

It appears to be the most paid for a college football helmet at auction. Earlier this year, an Archie Griffin game-used Ohio State helmet, believed to have been used during his 1974 and 1975 Heisman-winning seasons, sold for $28,680.

Goldin said Davis himself was not the consigner of the item, so it's not clear how much Davis made off the item, if anything at all.

Davis returned a missed 57-yard field goal by Alabama for 109 yards as time expired to beat the Crimson Tide. He also wore the helmet throughout the season, including the SEC championship game and the BCS title game.

Other items that sold in the auction included Babe Ruth's 1934 contract ($278,300), a Ruth game-used bat ($181,500), a 1903 World Series program ($111,320), a game-used Derek Jeter glove from 1999 ($67,760), Mike Schmidt's "Sultan of Swat Award" Crown ($55,660) as well as Schmidt's 1984 Gold Glove ($44,770).

It's a good week for Auburn collectors. A game-used Bo Jackson jersey closes in an auction this week. The top bid, as of Sunday morning, was $17,925.

No. 3 Auburn beat No. 4 Ole Miss on Saturday night, 35-31.
