ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- The Detroit Lions likely will send their second cornerback to injured reserve in as many weeks. Lions coach Jim Caldwell said Monday he does not anticipate rookie Nevin Lawson to return this season after he suffered dislocated toes on his left foot during the Lions' 24-7 loss to Carolina on Sunday. Lawson was taken to Mercy Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina, immediately after the injury and was in surgery before the game ended.  "How long it's going to be, I am not certain as of yet, the doctors are going to look at it before they release him," Caldwell said Monday. "He's still there. He'll be back in a day or so, and that'll give us a prognosis on the injury. "Would not anticipate that he'll be back this year, OK, but hopefully he'll heal quickly." Lawson, who took over the team's starting slot cornerback spot after Bill Bentley tore his ACL in the season opener against the New York Giants, was fortunate because one of Carolina's team physicians is Robert Anderson of OrthoCarolina, one of the leading foot and ankle specialists in the country. Anderson took over Lawson's treatment almost immediately, and the former president of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society suggested Lawson go into surgery as soon as possible. "That particular surgery that he went through, from what I understand, they said that it is extremely important if you can get it in early because so many different things can happen," Caldwell said. "Compartment syndrome can set in, which is a thing they try to avoid, and they were able to avoid that to get the surgery done quickly." Compartment syndrome is a condition where pressure in the muscles could decrease blood flow and could damage nerves and muscles. Caldwell said that condition was avoided. As far as how the Lions will replace Lawson, Caldwell said the team will consider both looking at free agents off the street and potentially promoting Mohammed Seisay from the practice squad. The Lions worked out cornerbacks the past two weeks, including Champ Bailey and Dimitri Patterson.
