ACC media days: Day 1 superlatives

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Day 1 of ACC media days is in the books. There were a few surprises, a handful of juicy quotes and, of course, some fashionistas. Here are the highlights from the Grandover Resort & Conference Center.

Best dressed: Players were wearing their schools' polo shirts, to be fair. But NC State running back Tony Creecy still somehow made a statement, wearing brown wing-tipped shoes, boasting a gold diesel watch and sporting red-dyed tips of his dreadlocks. Creecy mentioned that he has upward of 100 pairs of shoes in his closet, so this was probably just another day for the redshirt senior.

Best quote: Jameis Winston apparently does not know where his Heisman hardware is: "I don't know where my Heisman Trophy is now. I think my dad takes it to restaurants now. I would not put it past him. He has my trophy somewhere new every day. Well, our trophy."

Biggest surprise: Winston and Florida State teammate P.J. Williams drew the biggest crowd, as expected. But the second-biggest audience, at least in the print room, might have been the contingent awaiting Duke. The reigning Coastal Division champions return plenty of big names from last season's 10-4 campaign, and the Blue Devils had guard Laken Tomlinson and linebacker Kelby Brown as their representatives.

Overlooked casualty: NCAA reform and the potential for enhanced scholarships speak to the improving treatment of college athletes. Brown, the Duke redshirt senior, is happy with everything he already receives from his scholarship. But he sees room for one more amenity. "Maybe parking tickets," he added to a round of laughs. With a rate that Brown says runs about $200 per semester, who can blame him?

Missed opportunity: Louisville receiver DeVante Parker goes by the nickname Spiderman. Told by a reporter that he should refer to himself as DeVante "Peter" Parker after the superhero's namesake, Parker settled for DeVante "Spiderman" Parker.

Best non-answer: Commissioner John Swofford delivered a long opening statement about the state of the ACC, with no mention of former member Maryland. The first thing Swofford was asked about when it was opened up to the floor for questions? You guessed it -- the Terrapins, with Swofford saying he could not comment on it: "It's still in process, and what I've said before is that we wish Maryland well. They were a quality member of this league for 60 years, and our league feels that it has a responsibility to the Atlantic Coast Conference member institutions to live by our constitution and bylaws as they leave the league. And I'll leave it at that." Hey, he said he wishes them well.
