Vote: Week 10 Pac-12 Blog Play of the Week

The week 10 vote is here, folks. Make your move.

Payoff for Payton

With UCLA clinging to a 10-7 lead late in the third quarter, quarterback Brett Hundley connected with wide receiver Jordan Payton for a 70-yard score. The TD pass was the 68th of Hundley’s career, tying him with Cade McNown for the UCLA TD pass record. It was a perfectly lofted pass to Payton, who had to outrun only Arizona freshman cornerback Cam Denson before finding his way to the end zone. That one passing play accounted for more than a third of the Bruins’ total passing yards and gave UCLA its final margin of victory to keep them alive in the South Division conversation.

His Shaqness

Shaq Thompson getting 15 carries? We like. On Saturday, he tallied his second offensive score of the season with a 24-yard rushing touchdown. Quarterback Cyler Miles pitched it to Thompson, who put his foot on the gas and got through three Colorado defensive players before giving the Huskies their first score of the game and cutting into (what was) the Buffs’ 10-point lead. Side props to wide receiver Jaydon Mickens for throwing a great block to spring Thompson to this TD.

Extra spin cycle

Oregon sophomore running back Thomas Tyner hasn’t gotten the same recognition this season as his fellow Duck RBs, Royce Freeman (true freshman) or Byron Marshall (Oregon moved him into more of a receiving role). But on Saturday, he made his presence very much known … especially if your name is Jordan Richards. His 21-yard between-the-tackles-spin-past-you-haha-sorry score put Oregon up 31-16 with just three seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Dante’s Inferno

Freshman Dante Pettis picked up his first career TD pass in the third quarter and then followed it with a fourth-quarter punt return touchdown. Not a bad day, freshman. Not a bad day at all. His 87-yard touchdown return sealed the game for the Huskies, extending their lead to final margin (with a PAT) of 38-23. With Thompson playing so much on offense, someone on the Husky special teams or defense had to score a non-offensive TD, right? Isn’t that like a requirement for that team?

Groza Award? Or Gro-Zane Award?

Against a team that’s known so much for its kicker (Utah’s Andy Phillips), Arizona State kicker Zane Gonzalez was able to steal the show when he took care of business in overtime, nailing a 36-yard field goal to give the Sun Devils the 19-16 win in Tempe. Not to mention he also set up the possibility of overtime by hitting a 30-yarder in the fourth quarter to tie it up 16-16. Now, we know that a 36-yard field goal isn’t -- by any means -- the craziest play you’ve ever seen. But consider the surrounding circumstances. Not only was the game on the line, control of the South Division in the Pac-12 was on the line. And with that on his shoulders, Gonzalez went out and hit that 36-yarder like it were no big deal.
