Browns' second-round dilemma: Pass up top-rated quarterback or add more future picks

Editor's note: Tony Grossi covers the Cleveland Browns for ESPN 850 WKNR.

Entering the second night of their first draft, the moment of truth has arrived for the New Browns Order.

Either they take Michigan State quarterback Connor Cook with the first pick of the night, No. 32 overall, or they put off that position for more of a developmental quarterback later in the draft.

No. 32 is a valuable pick, coveted by several teams because of many players with high grades still available. Before the first round ended on Thursday night, the Browns said they already received trade interest in the pick.

But if they trade down – even by only a few notches – they risk losing Cook to the Dallas Cowboys, who are sitting at No. 34 and presumably still smoldering for being outfoxed by Denver Broncos GM John Elway for a trade-up to the bottom of the first round to take Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch.

In fact, there is at least one report Friday afternoon that the Browns and Cowboys are engaged in talks to exchange spots in the second round.

If the Browns do it, they know they probably lose Cook, the top-rated quarterback available.

If they can live without Cook, the Browns can drop down two more spots at the addition of perhaps a future second-round pick, and go on with their draft.

The best players who may appeal to the Browns in the second round may include: UCLA linebacker Myles Jack, Alabama linebacker Reggie Rugland, Ohio State receiver Michael Thomas, Arkansas tight end Hunter Henry, Alabama defensive linemen A’Shawn Robinson and Jarren Reed, Clemson defensive end Kevin Dodd, Boise State rush linebacker Kamalei Correa, and Indiana offensive tackle Jason Spriggs.

Through previous trades, the Browns own three picks in tonight’s third round: Nos. 65, 76 and 77.

They also have three picks in Saturday’s fourth round, three in the fifth and one in the seventh.
