Lions to have game captains in 2014

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- When the Detroit Lions open up the season Monday night, look carefully at the team’s jerseys.

You are unlikely to see the captain’s "C" on any of the players.

Detroit coach Jim Caldwell said Friday that he plans on doing captains by the game this season, and because of that no player will wear the "C" on his jersey.

"We have so many good leaders on this team that we’ll end up picking game captains," Caldwell said. "That’s how we’ll work it for the entire year."

How teams do captains varies around the NFL. The Lions have even changed how they have done captains depending on the year, sometimes installing permanent captains for the season and other times having a hybrid of permanent captains and rotating game captains.

While Caldwell indicated they will have rotating game captains, it is still possible for them to do a combination of permanent and rotational captains. Caldwell said the team will officially announce its captains situation Saturday.

Last season, the Lions had six permanent captains -- four of whom are still with the Lions. Calvin Johnson and Matthew Stafford were the offensive captains. Stephen Tulloch and Ndamukong Suh were the defensive captains, and David Akers and John Wendling were the special teams captains.

Akers and Wendling are no longer with the Lions.
