Oregon State has hired John Garrett as offensive coordinator, the school announced Tuesday.
Garrett spent the 2013 season as the wide receivers coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the previous six seasons on the staff of the Dallas Cowboys, who are coached by his brother, Jason Garrett.
"I'm excited to be joining the coaching staff at Oregon State University," Garrett said in a statement. "I have tremendous respect for what Coach [Mike] Riley, his staff and players have accomplished over the years and I look forward to being part of the program's continued success. I consider it an honor to represent 'Beaver Nation' as a coach for Oregon State."
Garrett replaces Danny Langsdorf, who left to become the quarterbacks coach of the New York Giants after serving as the Beavers' offensive coordinator since 2005. Garrett also will coach quarterbacks and tight ends.
"[Garrett] is about teaching, details and technique," Riley said in a statement. "His broad knowledge of the game will add to what we are doing at Oregon State. We have a senior quarterback [Sean Mannion]; we aren't changing everything out under Sean, but my goal is for our offense to continue to grow and evolve, and John will certainly provide that opportunity to do so."
Mannion set a Pac-12 record with 4,662 passing yards in 2013, and he briefly considered a jump to the NFL before deciding to return to Corvallis for his final year. Barring any unforeseen setbacks, he likely will leave as the conference's all-time leading passer. His 10,436 passing yards are 1,891 behind all-time leader Matt Barkley.
Riley and Garrett's relationship dates to 1991, when Garrett played receiver for the Riley-coached San Antonio Riders of the World League. Garrett's coaching career began the year before as a volunteer assistant at Princeton, his alma mater. He's spent most of his career in the NFL in various capacities, but was on staff for three years at Virginia (2004-06), where he coached receivers and held the title of assistant coach for offense in the final season. Garrett has never held the title of offensive coordinator.
Oregon State begins spring practice on March 31. It will play its spring game on May 3.
