The Detroit Lions have taken care of at least one of their pending free agents.

Safety Don Carey signed a three-year contract extension last month to remain with the Lions, according to a report in the Detroit Free Press. MLive is reporting Carey signed for $730,000 in 2014, $745,000 in 2015 and $760,000 in 2016.

The Free Press is reporting the deal has a signing bonus of $800,000 and roster bonuses for $50,000 in the last two years of the contract.

A message left for Carey's agent seeking confirmation was not immediately returned.

Carey played multiple roles this season for the Lions. He was one of their primary special teams players as one of the gunners on the punt coverage unit. He played in 14 games for Detroit this season, making 19 tackles on defense, often playing nickel when the Lions had injury issues at cornerback. He also had 11 special teams tackles.

After playing in Jacksonville in 2010, Carey has spent the past three seasons with Detroit. He was originally drafted by Cleveland in the sixth round of the 2009 draft. He has 105 career tackles and three career interceptions.

Carey was one of three pending free agents in the Detroit secondary after this season along with starting cornerback Rashean Mathis and safety John Wendling. At minimum, this gives the Lions a dependable special teams player for the foreseeable future and someone who can do multiple things.

The 26-year-old's signing to a three-year deal also brings to question whether Detroit potentially sees him as an option to see more snaps in the secondary next season. Starting safety Louis Delmas is entering the final year of his contract and is scheduled to have a cap number of $6.5 million in 2014.

This also locks up two safeties for Detroit in the long term. Glover Quin, who signed with Detroit before the 2013 season, is under contract through 2017.
