Murray and Nadal ease into third round

British No.1 Andy Murray booked his place in the third round of the French Open following a 6-3 6-1 6-3 win over Marinko Matosevic.

Murray, a semi-finalist at Roland Garros in 2011, was never troubled by the Australian as he wrapped up victory in an hour and 56 minutes. The reigning Wimbledon champion will next face Philipp Kohlschreiber in the last 32 after he defeated Denis Istomin 6-3 7-6(5) 6-2.

Murray dropped serve once in the match, which came when he was looking to clinch the win at 5-2 in front in the third set. Murray reacted immediately by breaking his opponent in the following game to seal victory.

"It was a good serving performance today, especially when I was down in games," Murray said.

"In the game I got broken right at the end, it was not down to my serving, really. I just missed a few other shots. I was just trying to make sure that my intensity was there every moment, especially at the beginning of the sets. I managed to get ahead early in all of them, and that helped."

Rafael Nadal put on another masterclass on the clay of Roland Garros as the world No.1 and eight-time French Open champion moved into the third round with a 6-2 6-2 6-3 win over Dominic Thiem.

Although the Spaniard broke Thiem's serve seven times, the Austrian's heavy groundstrokes caused Nadal problems and he lost on his own serve twice.

Nadal applauded Thiem as he left the court and was full of praise for his 20-year-old opponent afterward.

"He was able to hit the ball very strong from the backhand and forehand," Nadal said. "He has completely everything to become a champion."

With Nadal serving at 5-1 in the first set, Thiem saved a set point with a backhand volley at the net, then forced a break point with a forehand winner into the right corner and won the game with a replica stroke on the next point.

Nadal sealed the second set with a forehand winner down the line, but Thiem broke him again and then held for a 3-1 lead in the third.

That prompted Nadal to step up a gear and he secured two consecutive breaks.

He converted his second match point when Thiem's forehand looped out, and he next faces Leonardo Mayer after he defeated Teymuraz Gabashvili 6-2 4-6 6-4 6-4.

The man who Nadal beat in the final last year, David Ferrer, made similarly light work of Italy's Simone Bolelli.

The fifth seed needed a little more than an hour and a half to see off Bolelli 6-2 6-3 6-2 on Court Suzanne Lenglen.
